چکیده

Abstract. Acoustic waves in porous media are subject to dispersion and strong attenuation. A rigorous asymptotic solution of Biot’s equation involves a complex eikonal function and its numerical implementation requires complex space-time ray tracing. Attenuation is represented by the imaginary part of the eikonal. Non-negativity of timeaveraged dissipation in time-periodic motions implies that the imaginary part of the eikonal is non-decreasing along the direction of the energy flux.

Ray-tracing and Interferometry in Schwarzschild Geometry

Here, we investigate the possible optical anisotropy of vacuum due to gravitational field. In doing this, we provide sufficient evidence from direct coordinate integration of the null-geodesic equations obtained from the Lagrangian method, as well as ray-tracing equations obtained from the Plebanski’s equivalent medium theory. All calculations are done for the Schwarzschild geometry, which resu...

An Efficient Algorithm for General 3D-Seismic Body Waves (SSP and VSP Applications)

Abstract The ray series method may be generalized using a ray centered coordinate system for general 3D-heterogeneous media. This method is useful for Amplitude Versus Offset (AVO) seismic modeling, seismic analysis, interpretational purposes, and comparison with seismic field observations. For each central ray (constant ray parameter), the kinematic (the eikonal) and dynamic ray tracing system ...

On the Equivalence of the Linear Biot’s Theory and the Linear Theory of Porous Media

Assuming a geometrically linear description (small displacements and small deformation gradients) and linear constitutive equations (Hooke’s law) the governing equations are derived for two poroelastic theories, Biot’s theory (BT) and the Theory of Porous Media (TPM – mixture theory extended by the concept of volume fractions). In both cases, the solid displacements and the pore pressure are th...

Asymptotic Analysis of Binary Gas Mixture Separation by Nanometric Tubular Ceramic Membranes: Cocurrent and Countercurrent Flow Patterns

Analytical gas-permeation models for predicting the separation process across  membranes (exit compositions and area requirement) constitutes an important and necessary step in understanding the overall performance of  membrane modules. But, the exact (numerical) solution methods suffer from the complexity of the solution. Therefore, solutions of nonlinear ordinary differential equations th...

Huygens wavefront tracing: A robust alternative to conventional ray tracing

We present a method of ray tracing that is based on a system of differential equations equivalent to the eikonal equation, but formulated in the ray coordinate system. We use a first-order discretization scheme that is interpreted very simply in terms of the Huygens’ principle. The method has proved to be a robust alternative to conventional ray tracing, while being faster and having a better a...
